DOGBREEDS
Danish-Swedish Farmdog
Danish-Swedish farm dogs are social, active, friendly, cuddly, and independent.
We are adaptable and social dogs. It is therefore not uncommon for our owners to own several of us, to keep each other company.
Danish-Swedish farmdog
Traditionally, we were used as farm dogs, which our name also implies. Our tasks were many and varied. Everything from pest control, to keeping foxes away from the chickens, and warning our owners of potential dangers. In addition, we were bred to be social members of the family, who could entertain the children.
Social and active
We are adaptable and social dogs. It is therefore not uncommon for our owners to own several of us, to keep each other company. Some of us may even have difficulties with being alone because we are so social by nature.
It is worth mentioning that we still have some hunting instinct left. This can be reflected in our tendency to hunt small animals.
A Danish-Swedish farm dog's temperament can be described as: lively, friendly, alert, cuddly, and independent. The latter means that the owners should practice a lot on summoning us, especially if we are to go unleashed. Because of our hunting instinct, we can run away if we discover something of interest. Note that the degree of hunting instinct varies between individuals.
The association for the Danish-Swedish farm dog points out that we need a «mild and positive upbringing». If we are treated right, we will become excellent family dogs.
Guarding instincts
Farm dogs must be able to notify when unauthorized people arrive, whether they are humans or animals. We have this quality. You have to be prepared for us to make noise when we discover something abnormal.
Though, we are not whiny dogs, so we do not bark unless we have a good reason to. We will warn when strangers arrive but are usually not e shy or aggressive towards strangers. We may, however, be somewhat reserved.
Suitable for people with an active lifestyle.
Danish-Swedish farm dogs are active dogs that require a lot of activation and exercise to thrive. We are best suited for owners with active lifestyles. We love long and varied walks, whether it is in the mountains or in the woods.
We are more than happy to partake in dog sports, such as agility and obedience.
When it comes to agility training, we have the potential to achieve great results thanks to our natural agility, resilience, and speed. We also love to learn, making us strong competitors in obedience. Our sharp sense of smell makes us great sniffer dogs too!
We love snuggles!
Do not forget to play with us! Variation between walking, training, and play is the key to getting a happy and happy Danish-Swedish farm dog.
If you succeed in finding this balance, you will discover that we love snuggles too! We like to lie under a blanket, close to our owners, after a long day outdoors.
Relationships with other animals
As the social breed we are, we have a love for other animals too. It is more than possible to get a Danish-Swedish farm dog to get along with other dogs and animals. But it is an advantage to introduce us from an early age.
Be aware that some of us have strong hunting instincts. Small pets, such as rodents, our favorite animals to hunt, could become challenging to get along with. With early socialization, however, we can get along with cats and other animals.
Good health
Danish-Swedish farm dogs are healthy dogs. Some people may develop hip dysplasia, a known disorder that affects many dog breeds.
A small proportion of us can also be affected by so-called leg Perthes, a condition that breaks down the bone tissue in the femur.
A Danish-Swedish farm dog usually lives for 10-14 years.
