Eurasier
People should be aware that we can be a little demanding in our training because of our intelligence.
A by-product of our intelligence is distinct independence, which often implies self-will.
However, Eurasian dogs are calm, balanced, confident and loyal. We can be watchdogs because we are a vigilant breed. We are aware of most of what is happening around us. But we are not much of a barking breed.
A Eurasian is not aggressive; it takes quite a bit to provoke us. Often a Eurasian dog will be eager to greet other dogs.
We are calm, kind and playful towards children and most other animals. However, this depends on our upbringing. The earlier we are exposed to children and animals, the more likely we'll get along.
People should know that we dislike being alone
The Eurasian is a social breed that demands to be with its owners at all times. Many of us will have difficulties accepting solidarity.
We become wonderful companions when we are included in activities with our whole family!
How much activity does a Eurasian need?
The Eurasian is not the most active dogs. We have a moderate need for physical activity. Most of us enjoy long walks but rarely require it.
Some Eurasian owners will go so far as to call us a little lazy.
Like all dogs, we need physical activity to stay healthy, both mentally and physically. Most people will find that it often takes about an hour of exercise a day for us to be happy.
Even though we are not working dogs, we can be used for a lot. For example, some people love to participate in agility. There may be a hunting instinct in some individuals, but not all.
Eurasians often appreciate the opportunity to play. In addition to hikes, play is often a great form of stimuli. An understimulated Eurasian can be naughty.
Do we bark a lot?
We may bark when we discover something "suspicious", for example, when strangers come to visit. But for the most part, we are quiet.
There are different personalities between individuals in our breed. But in general, we are a breed that makes little noise. As the Norwegian Eurasian Club writes on its website:
"A Eurasian should be vigilant and attentive, without being whiny and barking little".
Self-cleaning fur that is easy to care for
Many dog breeds tend to smell very much like a dog. We Eurasians are known for not giving off the typical "dog smell". We smell much nicer.
Our fur is self-cleaning, which means that dust, dirt and mud often disappear by itself. In other words, the coat is easy to care for.
We shed our fur about 1-2 times a year.
A healthy breed that lives long
The Eurasian is a healthy breed with a life expectancy of 10-15 years.
Like all dog breeds, we can be affected by certain diseases/conditions. This includes hip joint dysplasia and the knee joint defect patellar dislocation.
PS: All dogs are unique!
Therefore, this breed description must not be seen as a conclusion but as an attempt to describe the most general features of each breed. There will always be significant variations between individuals.
