DOGBREEDS
Flat-Coated Retriever
The popular family dog is described as the Peter Pan of dogs.
Like the Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever, the Flat-Coated Retriever has become one of the world's most popular dog breeds.
Here are some of the reasons why:
- We are friendly, mentally stable, and good with children
- Energetic
- Docile
- Forever young
Friendly and stable
One of the main reasons we have become so popular is our friendliness and stability. Our constantly wagging tail is a characteristic of the breed.
We, the Flat-Coated Retrievers, are social dogs who love to be with our family, and most "Flatters" will go far to please our owners.
Our stable disposition means we are safe dogs, which fit nicely into a family. Flat-Coated Retrievers are known for being good with children.
Do not underestimate the level of activity
We are energetic and active dogs. Sure, sometimes we will relax on the couch or in the lap of our owners. However, Flat-Coated Retrievers are constantly active dogs that need both physical and mental stimuli. Do you love long walks in nature? And loads of exercise? Then the flat-coated retriever is perfect.
Submissive dogs with lots of passion!
Their desire to satisfy their owners is remarkable. The docility this dog expresses makes for a great training partner! If these traits aren't utilized, the coated flat retriever can develop destructive behavior.
Give them varied tasks. As retrieving dogs, they love to pick up things for their owner.
Flat-coated retrievers have great hunting skills and are experts in finding birds and retrieving birds.
You can use them for much more. They are suitable as service dogs due to their kind nature. They have a great sense of smell and are common as sniffer dogs too! Many dog trainers use them for agility. Only the imagination sets limits as to what you can use this breed for.
Versatility is one of the greatest strengths of Flat-coated retrievers.
Peter Pan?
The similarities between the different retrievers are striking. However, one of the more apparent differences the flat-coated retriever has to the other retrievers; is its demanding nature. They want a lot of attention and are somewhat hyperactive.
They are often referred to as "the Peter Pan of dogs" because they mature late.
A Flat-coated retriever retains puppy-like behavior well into adulthood.
Important to know about health
Flat-coated retrievers are considered a relatively healthy breed. Though, there are some known health issues.
Hip dysplasia occurs in less than 5 percent of individuals.
Other diseases/conditions that exist include:
- Fatal kidney disease called Renal dysplasia
- Knee defect patellar dislocation
- Allergy, atopy, and other skin problems
- Back disorder spondylosis
- Cancer (relatively high incidence)
Suppose you are considering getting a Flat-coated retriever. In that case, you must find a serious breeder who focuses on health.
Healthy individuals have a life expectancy of 8-12 years.
