DOGBREEDS
Maltese dog
I am among the oldest miniature dogs in the world.
I am among the oldest miniature dogs in the world.
Even though we are small dogs, our intelligence is high and our hearts big. We are loving, kind, calm, fearless, and love close contact with our people.
Do not let our sweet appearance fool you. We are headstrong beings - which means you must be consistent in your upbringing. If you are not, we can quickly take command!
If you give us care, love, and a proper upbringing, we are perfect companions- and family dogs.
How much activity does a Maltese need?
We love walks, but we are not the dog to bring to the most challenging expeditions. But we still require quite a fair amount of daily exercise.
We can be okay with a few short walks around the neighborhood if we get a lot of attention when indoors. As long as we Maltese can be with our owners, we are happy.
Talkative breed!
We may be one of the world's most miniature dog breeds, but there is undoubtedly a lot of sound in us.
We tend to bark a lot if we do not get enough attention. However, there are significant differences between individuals. How much we bark depends largely on how you train us.
Some may end up being whiny dogs, while others will only bark sporadically. However, eliminating barking completely is impossible.
With the proper upbringing, it is possible to reduce the barking considerably. We will still bark when the doorbell rings, for example.
Relationships with other animals
As a rule, we love other animals, both dogs, and cats. Though, it is important to socialize us from the puppy stage.
We are true miniature dogs! So please be vigilant when we play with other dogs. Because even if we are robust, we can be harmed if we play with a much larger and heavier dog.
Short legs, High maintenance
Us Maltese dogs have long, silky fur. It tends to get tangles if it's not cared for well.
Many people choose to give us a short hairstyle. It makes our maintenance less complicated but still prevalent. If you can not deal with care regularly, then the Maltese is not the breed for you.
The Maltese has a long life expectancy.
Maltese usually have excellent health; we often live to be 16 years old.
Some diseases/disorders can still occur. This applies to kneecap dislocation (defects in the knee joint), hereditary eye diseases, and tartar. The latter can be prevented with daily dental care.
Remember to remove pus that accumulates under our eyes because watery eyes are a well-known problem for some.
Size/appearance
Maltese are small dogs and often weigh between 3-4 kg.

Something to be aware of
We are incredibly affectionate towards our owners. We love our family and undoubtedly thrive when we get to spend a lot of time with them. While it is possible to train us to be home alone, many of us suffer from separation anxiety.
We, therefore, hope that you limit our alone time to a minimum.
