Tiny size, vast personality! This is how you can describe me. We are neither hunters, retrieving dogs, nor guard dogs. Shih Tzus are companion dogs that live to please their family.
Friendly, stubborn, tough, and playful
Shih Tzus are alert, active, playful, and friendly companion dogs who enjoy lazy sofa days. We are also highly self-confident, courageous, and stubborn.
This total package makes us fun and rewarding dogs to interact with. Shih Tzus are also known to have strong ties to their families. These are qualities we have had for thousands of years. The Shih Tzu breed is one of the 14 oldest dog breeds in the world.
We thrive when we are with our families and can quickly become depressed from being alone.
Owning a Shih Tzu is no problem if you live in an apartment because we do not need much space. We can do just as fine on a farm in the countryside (but we do not like living outside).
We often get along very well with other animals and not least children. But beware when the little ones are near us - because of our size we can be hurt if we are handled carelessly.
The Shih Tzu is friendly to strangers but will bark when someone arrives.
Despite our modest size, we make a lot of sounds. In other words, we have some guarding qualities. We are not aggressive or hostile to strangers; we just alert you when they arrive. Once the guest has entered the house, we are often curious and interested in getting to know the person.
With the right training, it is possible to train us to be calm and quiet when we are indoors.
Love fur? You should.
If you go for the acquisition of a Shih Tzu, you also get a lot of fur on the purchase; that's just the way it is.
We are high maintenance.
Regular care is required to maintain the quality of our fur. It is recommended to do so from an early stage -it will pay off when we get older.
Our fur is also a big reason why we are popular show dogs.
Long life
Like many other small dogs, the Shin Tzu has a long lifespan. On average, a healthy individual will live for between 10-13 years.
The breed is also not particularly bothered by hereditary diseases.
Five things you should know about me
- Weighs between 4.5-8 kilos and has a maximum mane height of 27 cm.
- We are "portable" dogs that are easy to take with you (can usually be carried in the cabin on planes).
- Getting clean can be challenging.
- Our short snout does not cool down the air, so we tolerate heat quite poorly.
- Remember to give us exercise, even if we are small dogs and require less than many other breeds.
