Tibetian spaniel
Tibetan Spaniels are large dogs in a small format.
Tibetian spaniel originates from Tibet. We were used as guard dogs in and around the monasteries.
Tibetian spaniel
Tibetian spaniel originates from Tibet. We were used as guard dogs in and around the monasteries. We were found on top of walls or on the mountainside as we prefer high points for a better overview. When something unordinary happened, we were quick to alert people.
Guard instincts and a desire for independence are still prominent features in today's Tibetan Spaniels.
Self-willed and independent, but loves close contact
Tibetan Spaniels are known for being lively, playful, and active dogs, who love to go our own way. "The Tibber" has characteristics that tend to put people's patience to the test. At the same time, we are calm and extremely loyal to our owners.
You can safely say that the Tibetan Spaniel loves close contact. One of the best things we know is to be close to our owners. This feature was useful at the beginning of our history. It could get cold in Tibet, and what could be better than warming up on a four-legged teddy bear?
"Cunning as a fox, independent as a cat and inventive as a monkey"
The Tibetan Spaniel can be an excellent family member. But one should be aware that the breed has retained many of its original characteristics. We are not necessarily the breed that is most adapted to today's western societies.
As the Norwegian Miniature Dog Club notes. It is often said that the Tibetan Spaniel is "cunning as a fox, independent as a cat and inventive as a monkey".
"The Tibber" knows what it wants. We like to make our own rules and are not afraid to challenge people. It is no secret that the breed can be challenging for some.
Strong will to explore
There is a basic desire for adventure in us. An urge to explore the unknown. Even though we are small dogs, our intelligence is great. We can quickly get bored. We do not thrive when we are alone, and have a need to be activated, both physically and mentally.
An under-stimulated Tibetan spaniel can develop destructive behavior.
Tibetan Spaniel dogs are not only known for their lively behavior. We are also known to be sensitive types, who can read people's emotions. This means that we react quickly to people's moods and are affected by different moods.
Skilled climbers
We also have another distinctive feature: we like heights (no wonder many compare us to cats). Remember that we come from Tibet, a landscape surrounded by mountains. "The Tibber" has been skilled climbers since the dawn of time.
Do not be surprised if we seek heights, whether outdoors or indoors. In short: we like to have an overview! In addition, we tend to bark when we discover something "abnormal". For example, when strangers approach.
We, Tibetan Spaniels, take our time when getting to know strangers. This process must take place on our terms. If not, you may end up with a dog afraid to meet new people.
Tibetan Spaniel are small dogs but need daily exercise
Yes, we are small dogs, but we still have to move! To get a happy Tibetan spaniel, daily walks are required. Preferably about 1 hour a day (at least) and plenty of play.
We have a strong urge to explore. This can result in inventive ways out of the garden. Make sure you secure your outside area well so that we do not run away. Thank me later.
Long life expectancy
Tibetan Spaniel is a generally healthy breed. Some health implications can still occur. This primarily applies to the hereditary eye disease progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
Most of us live between 12-15 years, some also get a little older.
Sheds twice a year
Our fur has a medium to high need for maintenance. It is usually enough to comb us 2-3 times a week.
Something to be aware of
Tibetan Spaniels learn quickly, but we have an inherent stubbornness. It can make us not disobedient at times.
We are kind and protective towards children. Due to our modest size, small children must be extra careful when handling us, so that we are not harmed.
If we get bored, we can bark a lot.
